Objective

Volkswagen Sweden wanted to build buzz around the launch of the new Beetle Turbo and reach audiences beyond typical car buyers, leaning into the double meaning of "bug" — the insect and the car's nickname. Teaming up with bookmaker Betsson turned that pun into a running story people had a reason to check on every day of launch week.

Solution

Over five weekdays, visitors went to vwbugrun.com to watch real ground beetles race down a 292 cm track with turns and climbs. Each evening brought a new heat of eight bugs, and players could browse profiles of all 32 racers — with names like Boris Turbo, Patsy Darkness and El Diablo — then place free points bets on the winner and track their standing on a leaderboard. The two fastest bugs from each heat carried through to a live final on Friday morning, rebroadcast that evening for anyone who'd missed it, and players in Scandinavia could additionally place real-money bets on the final through betsson.se, at odds set from a 40-bug pre-qualifying round. An archive of highlights let latecomers catch up on earlier heats before placing their bets.

How it plays

8 steps
  1. 1

The player arrives at vwbugrun.com during tournament week and lands on the arena page, where 32 live beetles are set to compete; the site lays out the race schedule and the week's rules.

  2. 2

In "The Bugs," the player browses profiles of all 32 competitors — nicknames like Boris Turbo, Patsy Darkness and El Diablo, their species, mock medical reports and parody sports statistics — and picks favorites to follow as a personal "stable" through the week.

  3. 3

Ahead of each heat, in "Heats & Bets," the player places a free bet: picking the winning beetle and predicting its finish time, earning points for accuracy.

  4. 4

Each weekday evening the player watches a live qualifying heat — eight beetles racing down a 292cm track with turns and inclines, shot and narrated like a motorsport broadcast — after which the two fastest from each of the four heats advance and the rest are eliminated.

  5. 5

The player tracks standings in "Highscore," which ranks both the beetles by race results and the players by betting performance, and can catch up on any missed broadcast through the "Highlights" archive of past heats.

  6. 6

The tournament closes with a live final, where the player can bet points as before or place real-money wagers through the bookmaker, with odds set from a pre-qualifying round that narrowed 40 beetles down to the 32 tournament entrants.

  7. 7

Points accumulated over the week put the player in contention for prizes such as VIP motorsport passes, a trip to London, football tickets and tablets.

  8. 8

Real-money betting is restricted to players within Scandinavia, in line with regional gambling regulations.
