How it plays

8 steps
  1. 1

The game runs entirely in the browser at a dedicated subdomain of the band's site, with no app to download or install. Controls adapt to the device: players slash with mouse movement on desktop or swipe on phone and tablet.

  2. 2

Before a session starts, players are prompted to connect a streaming service of their choice so the band's new album plays in the background while they play.

  3. 3

Each player is assigned an avatar modeled on one of the band's four members, who serve as the in-game characters wielding the sword.

  4. 4

In the core loop, the player swings a katana to slice through a stream of incoming objects drawn from the band's music video, including vinyl records, a milk carton, a watermelon, and a bong.

  5. 5

Points accumulate for each object sliced. The game is single-player, with the goal of reaching the highest score possible in a run; no multiplayer modes or structured levels are present.

  6. 6

A session ends when the player takes a screenshot of their final score, which serves as the only record of the result.

  7. 7

Players submit their run by posting the screenshot to Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram with a designated hashtag and a tag of the band, which registers it as a contest entry.

  8. 8

The top three scorers win branded prize packs, with the top prize bundling a card deck, casino-grade dice, a metal challenge coin, a vinyl copy of the album, and a T-shirt.

Objective

Red Fang and Relapse Records needed a way to keep fans engaged with Arrows, the band's first album in five years, months after its summer 2021 release — and to extend the life of the campaign's most-shared asset, the music video for "Arrows," built around members hacking a katana through a watermelon, a bong, and a milk jug. The brief, in the agency's own words, was to build something with the same reckless energy as that video. Two goals were built directly into the mechanic: linking a streaming account converted play sessions into album streams, and a high-score contest turned every player into someone posting about the band.

Solution

Blade to Waste puts you straight into a browser slashing game, no install needed, playable with a mouse or a fingertip. Before you start, it asks you to connect a streaming account so the Arrows album plays behind the session. You take control of an animated Red Fang member and swing a katana at the same objects from the "Arrows" video as they fly across the screen — a vinyl record, a milk jug, a watermelon, a bong — scoring points for each one you connect with. The session runs until you've worked through everything onscreen, leaving you with a final tally. You're then prompted to screenshot that score and post it to Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram with the hashtag #bladetowaste and a tag of the band, entering a drawing where the three highest scores win prize packs.
