Objective

Société Générale needed to move a limited run of DC Comics-branded credit cards — a product that's ordinarily hard to get anyone excited about. Timed to the theatrical release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the bank leaned on the two heroes' built-in rivalry to get comic fans talking, playing, and applying for the card.

Solution

The full-screen site opens on a cinematic, film-scored title sequence, then asks for one decision: pick your side, Batman or Superman. Once chosen, the player lands in that hero's camp and starts clicking to add strength to their team's side of a live tug-of-war against everyone playing for the other hero. There's no sign-up wall to get started — the fight is instant and ongoing, with every click nudging the overall balance of power. Players who want the actual reward move on from there to register online, which leads through to the DC-branded Société Générale card itself.

Results

The campaign drew more than 80,000 visitors without any paid media support, generated 19,000 online registrations, and the full print run of the limited-edition cards sold out within one month.

How it plays

5 steps
  1. 1

The player opens a fullscreen site that plays a cinematic, black-and-blue intro built from the film's motion and video, with no sign-up or tutorial before entry.

  2. 2

The single entry decision is choosing a side: Batman or Superman.

  3. 3

Once a side is picked, the player joins that hero's camp and repeatedly clicks; each click is the entire game action, adding strength to the chosen team with no rules or levels.

  4. 4

Clicks combine with those of every other player on the same side, so the contest plays out as one team of fans against the other in a running, collective tug-of-war.

  5. 5

Participation closes with an online sweepstakes sign-up that leads into Société Générale's limited-edition DC-branded bank card, the promotion the game was built around.
