Objective
AXE sought to establish its new AXE Lab fine fragrance as a premium competitor in the men's fragrance market, particularly among younger consumers. The brand aimed to achieve market leadership at major retailers like Walmart during the product's launch window. The campaign positioned the fragrance through an edgy, science-fiction narrative that appealed to the brand's core audience.
Solution
AXE Lab created an integrated experiential and digital campaign built around the concept of 'pharmasexual research'—pseudo-scientific laboratory experiments simulating women's reactions to the fragrance. The interactive web applications included simulations titled 'Dirty Mind Control' and 'The Stimulation Chamber,' featuring dosage-adjustment gameplay mechanics where users could calibrate fragrance intensity and observe exaggerated comedic effects. The campaign expanded beyond digital with pop-up laboratories deployed across multiple cities, where select participants could advance to an exclusive final event at the Playboy Mansion. The interactive components were developed by The Barbarian Group, while the creative campaign was executed by Bartle Bogle Hegarty New York. The broader campaign integrated print and outdoor media alongside the digital experiences.
Results
AXE Lab achieved the #1 selling men's fragrance position at Walmart during the campaign's launch period. No published metrics were found regarding participant counts, engagement duration, reach, or sales impact figures.
