Objective
Volvo built The Test Center to dramatize its pledge that, by 2020, no one would be seriously injured or killed in a new Volvo — timed to the launch of the V60. Rather than explain the car's safety systems in a commercial, the brand wanted people to experience them directly.
Solution
Visitors land on a full-screen microsite built around a virtual test center. Scrolling drives the V60 down the page, and each stop along the way opens up a different one of its safety systems to explore. At the center of the site is Safety First, a keyboard mini-game that has players react to on-screen prompts as they appear, racking up a score for speed and accuracy. The whole thing carries over to phones and tablets, where the same scroll-and-react journey plays out with swipes and taps instead of a keyboard.
- 1
The player lands on a fullscreen, dark Volvo microsite built around a single brand pledge — that no one should be seriously injured or killed in a new Volvo by 2020 — and is invited to explore the safety systems of the new V60.
- 2
The player scrolls (or, on touch devices, swipes) through a menu of sections; the car on screen animates and travels alongside the scroll, and the position in the menu determines which V60 safety system comes into view.
- 3
Selecting a section opens an animated scene built around the car that walks through how that particular safety system works.
- 4
At the center of the experience sits a keyboard-controlled mini-game, "Safety First," where the player presses keys on cue in a timed-test format and earns a score for their performance.
