Objective
Oreo aimed to capture the mobile gaming audience capitalizing on the Pokemon Go phenomenon. The campaign targeted European, Russian, and Latin American markets to boost brand engagement and drive point-of-sale conversions through an immersive, location-based mobile experience that would keep consumers engaged on a daily basis.
Solution
The Great Oreo Cookie Quest was a mobile app-based augmented reality scavenger hunt available on iOS, Android, and web across 30 countries. Players received daily clues about everyday objects and used their smartphone camera to scan the real world; the app's object-recognition engine confirmed matches and triggered a 3D animation of an Oreo cookie twisting open to reveal digital rewards. Rewards ranged from digital stickers and wallpapers to Google Play Store vouchers, exclusive content, and grand prizes including international travel and Google hardware. The backend was built on ASP.NET Core 2.0 with Kubernetes orchestration, enabling the global rollout. The campaign was developed by The Martin Agency, Carat, and Gravity Jack in partnership with Google.
