Objective
Gatorade sought to engage tennis fans and Serena Williams supporters during the 2016 US Open through an interactive branded experience. The campaign celebrated Serena's career achievement of 22 Grand Slam singles titles, connecting the brand to a cultural moment of athletic excellence and cultural significance.
Solution
Gatorade launched 'Serena Williams' Match Point,' the first multi-level video game playable within a Snapchat advertisement. The game featured 22 levels, each representing one of Serena's Grand Slam victories, playable through the ESPN Discover channel on Snapchat and at SerenaMatchPoint.com. The game employed a retro 8-bit visual style with historically accurate recreations of Serena's outfits, hairstyles, celebratory gestures, and the specific cities and courts of her championship matches. Gameplay mechanics involved tapping to serve and tapping left or right to return the ball to different sides of the court.
