Objective

Gatorade sought to celebrate Serena Williams' storied 22-major championship career during the 2016 US Open, engaging a younger audience (teens with no prior knowledge of her achievements) through an innovative mobile gaming experience rather than traditional sports history content.

Solution

An 8-bit styled Snapchat game featuring 22 playable levels, each representing one of Serena's Grand Slam victories. The game mechanic is a simple tap-to-time tennis game where players must perfectly time their taps to return serves and achieve match point. Each level recreates specific matches with accurate outfit colors and hairstyles matching what Williams actually wore during those tournaments. The game was embedded within Snapchat's ad unit, accessible through the ESPN channel in Snapchat Discover, and also available on a dedicated website at serenamatchpoint.com. A 23rd level was unlocked on September 10, 2016, coinciding with the US Open Women's Finals where Williams could have won her record 23rd major title.

Results

The campaign won a Silver Award at the 2017 Clio Sports Awards in the Single Platform Campaign (Social Media) category. No engagement metrics, player counts, or time-in-game data were published in available sources.
