Objective
Reese's Puffs aimed to create a memorable brand experience by merging physical packaging with music technology, targeting younger consumers interested in creative self-expression. The campaign partnered with Save The Music Foundation, a nonprofit focused on music education, positioning Reese's Puffs as a catalyst for musical experimentation and cultural engagement.
Solution
PuffsFX is an AR web application (PuffsFX.com) that uses smartphone cameras to detect cereal pieces placed on grid patterns on the back of Reese's Puffs boxes, transforming them into playable 16-step synthesizers. Three box variants featured different sounds: Crunchy Drum Machine (percussion), Creamy Lead Synth (melody), and Chocolatey Bass Synth (low-end), each with five sound packs across genres (90s hip-hop, synthwave, deep house, 8-bit, ambient). Multiple boxes could be combined to layer and produce full tracks. A limited-edition RP-PRO version offered a premium physical synthesizer with custom hardware. The campaign was supported by artist partnerships including Tinashe, Statik Selektah, Hit-Boy, Jetsonmaked, and Wondagurl.
Results
Over 4 million cereal boxes were converted into playable instruments. The campaign received coverage in Adweek, DJ Mag, and Hypebeast. No consumer engagement metrics or sales lift figures were publicly disclosed.
