Objective

History Channel used the game to promote the premiere of its A&E series "Warriors," giving site visitors a way to engage with the show's subject — weapons, tactics, training, and the psychology of history's most famous fighters — before the March 9, 2009 launch. The interactive format let history.com visitors spend time with the show's five warrior cultures ahead of the premiere.

Solution

The game opens on a title screen, then drops the player onto a world map with five points, one for each warrior culture from the series: Vikings, samurai, Spartans, Zulus, and American revolutionaries. Picking a point sends the player into training in that culture's fighting style, then into head-to-head matches against its warriors. Each opponent carries their own weapon and special moves layered on top of a shared move set, triggered with keyboard commands during the fight. Winning matches earns trophies, and collecting enough of them across all five cultures earns the player the title of "Warrior."

How it plays

6 steps
  1. 1

The game opens on a title screen for History Channel's Warriors, which the player starts directly from the site.

  2. 2

From there the player reaches a world map showing five locations, each representing one of the warrior cultures from the series — Vikings, samurai, Spartans, Zulus, and American Revolutionaries — and picks one to take up that culture's fighting style.

  3. 3

In the chosen location, the player trains the fighter in that culture's martial art, building up combat abilities ahead of a match.

  4. 4

Each match opens with a screen introducing the rival warrior and the setting, then moves into 2D combat controlled from the keyboard: a shared set of basic moves, special techniques unique to each warrior school bound to their own keys, and a culture-specific weapon with its own controls.

  5. 5

The player repeats the training-and-fight loop across opponents from each of the five traditions in turn — samurai, Zulu warrior, American Revolutionary, and the rest.

  6. 6

Wins earn trophies that track progress across all five cultures, and beating every opponent while collecting them earns the final title of "Warrior."
