Objective

MAS built the game to mark its 2021 centenary and give New Zealanders — in the words of Chief Member Advocacy Officer Mike Davy — a fun, low-pressure way to engage with the MAS brand rather than a straight anniversary announcement. Mapping insurance and investment products onto life stages was meant to make cover feel personal and concrete, showing how MAS stays with a member from a first policy through health cover and income protection. Woven through the board, chance cards let MAS tell its own hundred-year story — its members' part in the world wars, earthquakes, protests and national occasions — as part of the celebration.

Solution

Players open MAS Moments in the browser and spin a wheel to see how far their token moves along a board of life stages, racing a computer-controlled opponent rather than playing solo. Landing on a space turns up a chance card: some mark personal milestones — starting university, getting married, buying a first home, having kids, retiring — and tie each one to what it means for insurance or investment; others recount a moment from MAS's hundred-year history. Chance cards can also bounce a token forward or send it back, so the lead keeps changing hands. Reaching the final space enters the player into a prize draw.

How it plays

8 steps
  1. 1

The player opens masmoments.co.nz to a browser-based board game built for MAS's centenary, styled as a colorful take on Snakes and Ladders.

  2. 2

The player races a computer-controlled opponent, with two tokens advancing across the board in alternating turns.

  3. 3

Each turn the player spins a wheel, and the token moves forward the number of spaces it lands on.

  4. 4

Landing on certain tiles draws a chance card, which pushes the token forward or sends it backward.

  5. 5

Some chance cards mark personal-life milestones — university, marriage, a first home, children, retirement — each framed in terms of what it means for insurance and investment planning.

  6. 6

Other chance cards recount episodes from MAS's hundred-year history, touching on world wars, earthquakes, public protests, and national holidays.

  7. 7

Alongside these events, the game notes what kind of MAS coverage applies at that stage of life, from basic insurance needs to health cover and income protection.

  8. 8

Reaching the end of the board ends the game and lets the player enter a prize draw for an Amazon Echo.
