Objective

Marvel wanted a game that could live indefinitely on its own kids' portal rather than ride the release window of a single movie. So Playerthree built Hydra Dash as a free browser runner for Marvel HQ, rendered in Marvel's house "Evergreen" art style — a look kept deliberately separate from any one film or comic run so the game would stay current no matter what was playing in theaters.

Solution

The game opens straight in the browser, no install: Captain America runs on his own through a side-scrolling HYDRA base while the player handles jumps, attacks and his shield throw. Clearing missions unlocks the rest of the Avengers roster — Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, Black Panther, Falcon and Hawkeye — and each hero's signature move opens a different path through the same level, from Thor's lightning dash to Falcon's glide to Hulk's wall climb. Because some of the hidden intel drives scattered across the 12 missions sit on routes only one specific hero can reach, players end up replaying stages with a different character to track down what they missed the first time. Tokens picked up along the way go into a separate upgrade shop for each hero — faster rolls, a token magnet — and once the campaign is done there's an endless mode for just racking up distance. The whole thing plays the same with mouse and keyboard on desktop or touch on a phone.

How it plays

10 steps
  1. 1

Marvel Avengers Hydra Dash launches from Marvel's kids portal, where access may be limited by the player's region. The landing screen previews mini-goals and hero abilities and offers a sound toggle before the player picks Story Mode, which runs through 12 missions collecting memory sticks, or Endless Mode, a distance-only survival run.

  2. 2

The story setup explains that HYDRA has launched a new project threatening Earth, prompting the Avengers to band together to gather intel and free captured teammates. Character select opens with only Captain America playable; the other seven Avengers start locked.

  3. 3

A level map lists all 12 missions and shows, for each, the percentage of memory sticks collected so far; a level's flash-drive icon turns yellow once every stick on it has been found.

  4. 4

Inside a level the hero runs forward automatically, leaving the player to time jumps (up arrow or tap, with a double jump and a held tumble-jump), attacks on HYDRA agents (X), and a hero-specific special move (C) - Captain America's shield bash, Iron Man's flight to high platforms, Black Widow's evasive roll through tight gaps, Thor's electronics-disabling lightning, Falcon's post-jump glide, Black Panther's ceiling walk, Hawkeye's bow shot, or Hulk's enemy- and cage-smashing charge.

  5. 5

Along the run, players pick up scattered tokens and search branching side-paths for hidden memory sticks, the level's main collectible; a progress bar at the bottom of the screen marks how far the run has gone and where remaining sticks are located.

  6. 6

Any hit ends the run immediately, sending the level back to its start; a button in the bottom-left corner restarts it.

  7. 7

Finishing missions unlocks new playable heroes on a fixed schedule - Iron Man after level 1, Black Widow after level 2, Thor after level 4, and so on through level 10 - and because some memory sticks and paths require a specific ability, players replay earlier levels as different heroes to reach full completion.

  8. 8

Collected tokens fund per-hero upgrades, three tiers each, for tumble speed and a token-attracting magnet.

  9. 9

The overarching story goal is freeing Avengers that HYDRA has taken prisoner, with Hulk's ability built around breaking open their cages.

  10. 10

Endless Mode strips out missions and story, sending the hero running for pure distance against their own best run, which is saved locally in the browser.
