Objective
HBO created a mobile game companion to Terence Nance's new series 'Random Acts of Flyness,' extending the show's themes of empowerment and social commentary into interactive entertainment. The game focused specifically on depicting and helping players navigate the microaggressions, street harassment, and systemic discrimination experienced by Black women in urban spaces.
Solution
Resn developed an infinite runner game where players control protagonist Najja navigating through four Brooklyn environments—Street, Bar, Park, and Store. Players respond to character interactions through taps while avoiding or engaging with aggressive NPCs displaying dialogue options, with mechanics scaled across five difficulty levels and culminating in a boss level featuring a three-question quiz. Built with Three.js and WebGL, the game was deployed as a browser-based experience at kekubianassassin.resn.co.nz, optimized for smartphones. This marked Resn's first 3D game featuring animated characters, utilizing instanced geometries and render-target optimization techniques to maintain performance across mobile devices.
