Objective

Mercedes-AMG built the drift game to keep browser traffic on its own site and to put a current AMG model, the CL63 AMG, through its paces in a wintertime setting associated with the brand's driving-dynamics story.

Solution

Landing on mercedes-amg.com, the player drops straight into a single 60-second run behind the wheel of an AMG coupe on a snow-covered course, steering with the arrow keys and braking with the spacebar. There's no lap clock: drift boards are scattered around the track, and points come from sliding past them so the car's spray of snow lands on the boards, which means the player has to aim the slide rather than just hold it. Clip a board outright while drifting, though, and the run's score is wiped, so the challenge becomes threading a line that strings several boards together before time runs out. When the run ends, that's the session — no download, no sign-up, no second screen.

How it plays

7 steps
  1. 1

The player opens the game directly on Mercedes-AMG's own site, with no download, install, or account required — it loads and runs in the browser window.

  2. 2

A briefing sets the round's rule: 60 seconds to throw as much snow as possible onto drift boards placed around the course, with the run's score voided if the car touches a board while drifting.

  3. 3

The player controls a Mercedes CL63 AMG on a snow-covered course, steering with the arrow keys and braking with the space bar.

  4. 4

The core mechanic is drifting: the player provokes and holds a slide, then aims the direction of the slide so the plume of snow the car throws lands on a drift board, generally approaching each board from the side.

  5. 5

Because the round is short, scoring rewards stringing several boards together within a single continuous drift rather than hitting them one at a time.

  6. 6

When the 60-second timer expires, the game displays a point score for the run — with low scores mocked in the game's own tone — and lets the player retry to improve it.

  7. 7

A later version of the game, AMG Drift Revolution Winter Challenge, swaps in a CLK63 AMG Black Series on a snow-covered figure-eight track and changes the scoring goal to holding a 'perfect drift' for as much of the 60 seconds as possible, with going off course or over-rotating slowing the car and costing points.
