Objective

David Lloyd Clubs, a prestigious UK-based tennis and fitness chain, launched Rally Up to engage members and prospects with an innovative, interactive way to experience tennis. The campaign transformed smartphones into virtual tennis racquets, bringing the sport directly to mobile browsers and creating a unique digital touchpoint that blended entertainment with brand engagement.

Solution

Rally Up was a real-time multiplayer mobile web tennis game built entirely in the browser using CSS, SVG, and WebSockets technology. Players held their phones vertically and used motion controls (accelerometer) to turn their devices into virtual tennis racquets, allowing them to compete in rally gameplay against friends. The game operated peer-to-peer in real-time, enabling simultaneous gameplay without requiring app installation. Players could challenge friends and engage in fast-paced tennis matches directly through their mobile browsers.
