Objective
For the second year running, Belgian agency EPIC chose to back a nonprofit through craft rather than a donation cheque. It picked Live in Color, a Liège-based NGO that helps refugees settle through education and mentoring, and built a game to send a wider audience to the organisation's own projects.
Solution
The game opens on a grayscale world with a flightless goose already sliding down an endless run of floating islands, each modeled on a different region. The player has one move — hold to jump, spacebar on desktop or a tap on mobile — timing it to clear rocks and other obstacles that block the path; hit one from the side and the run ends, land on one from above and the goose bounces off. Six orbs are scattered along the course, and each one collected paints part of the landscape back into color, so the player watches the world recover in real time instead of watching a score climb. A run is timed by how long it takes to gather all six, and it closes on an end screen crediting the seconds spent "coloring the world," with a "Ride again" button to beat that time and a link that hands the player over to Live in Color's own mission.
Results
The game drew more than 3,000 plays in the first 24 hours after launch, with players spending an average of 1 minute 45 seconds per session.
- 1
The game opens on a loading screen for the title, then a start screen that pitches the premise over a colorless landscape — a flightless goose that slides instead of flying — behind a single «START COLORING» button.
- 2
The only instruction given is to press spacebar or tap the screen to jump; that one input is the entire control scheme on both desktop and mobile.
- 3
The run begins on its own, with the goose sliding forward and gaining speed before the player provides any input.
- 4
The goose travels down an endless, procedurally generated course of floating islands built from blocky geometry, rendered entirely in grayscale.
- 5
Holding the jump input yields a higher leap while a quick tap gives a small hop, letting the player clear gaps and line up landings; jumps also trail colored sparks, the first color visible in the gray world.
- 6
Six glowing orbs are placed along the course and must be landed on to collect, not just passed through; each one claimed unlocks a color that spreads across the landscape and sky, gradually repainting the scene over the run.
- 7
Obstacles on the track can be struck from the side, which trips the goose and costs time, or landed on from above, which bounces it forward and lets obstacles double as stepping stones.
- 8
A running clock tracks elapsed time throughout, framing the goal as clearing all six orbs as quickly as possible.
- 9
Collecting the last orb fully restores the world's color and ends the run on a results screen showing the player's time, alongside a message about the supported NGO, a link to learn more about it, a «Ride again» button to replay for a better time, and a footer crediting the studio.
- 10
Fullscreen and sound toggles remain available in the interface throughout the run.
