Objective
Volkswagen, as the official partner of the French Football Federation, sought to create an innovative marketing experience that would deepen fan engagement with football during major tournaments. The campaign aimed to revolutionize spectator interaction by merging physical gameplay with digital participation, allowing online audiences to become active participants rather than passive viewers. By connecting social media communities directly to real-world gameplay, VW positioned itself at the intersection of sports entertainment and interactive technology.
Solution
UNIT9 and DDB Paris developed the world's first digitally-connected foosball table, a 4K interactive installation featuring integrated GoPro cameras, surround sound, and real-time internet connectivity. Players competed on the physical table while an online community influenced live gameplay through a dedicated website (FraFra.fr) and Twitter hashtag (#FraFra), triggering dynamic rule changes: adding multiple balls simultaneously, repositioning or resizing goalposts, removing players from play, reversing controls, tilting the pitch, accelerating game speed, and fundamentally altering game rules mid-match. The system was built on Arduino/Raspberry Pi and Unity engine, with French national football stars including Paul Pogba and Olivier Giroud participating in beta testing. The installation was deployed at FIFA 2018 World Cup and UEFA Women's Euro Tournament 2017.
