Objective

Sony Pictures needed to build momentum for Terminator Salvation ahead of its international rollout, in a summer 2009 season packed with competing blockbusters. Instead of pushing another trailer, the studio wanted fans to step inside the film's core conflict — humans versus Machines — and stay engaged with the movie's official site through the release window. Big Spaceship built the game to hook casual and hardcore players alike, chasing the intensity of a console match inside a browser.

Solution

Players landed on the game page on the movie's official site and were playing within seconds — nothing to download or install. First came a choice of allegiance: fight for the Human Resistance or take up arms as a Machine. From there, the player dropped straight into a live match, teamed up five-a-side with strangers online, and worked with their squad to hunt down and destroy the opposing team before it destroyed them. Everything ran in real time against real opponents, so no two matches played out the same way, and a session ended the moment one side was wiped out.

How it plays

4 steps
  1. 1

The game loads directly in the browser on the Terminator Salvation movie site, with no download or client install required.

  2. 2

Before a match, the player picks a side in the film's conflict: the human Resistance or the Machines.

  3. 3

The player joins a real-time five-on-five match against other live players, Resistance against Machines, with the constant objective of destroying the opposing human player before being destroyed.

  4. 4

Matches run in real-time 3D graphics considered advanced for a browser game in 2009, which meant the game needed a fast connection and struggled on slower internet.
