Objective

Johnny Test, a popular animated franchise targeting young audiences in Canada, sought to deepen fan engagement through innovative interactive entertainment. Teletoon launched a branded iOS game in 2012 as a digital extension of the franchise, leveraging the character's popularity to introduce audiences to a groundbreaking multi-device gaming experience.

Solution

Roller Johnny is an iOS platformer where players select either Johnny Test or Dukey to navigate a colorful roller derby world, executing core gameplay actions of "sandwiching baddies and slingshotting each other." The game's innovation lay in Bluetooth-enabled cooperative play: multiple iDevices synchronized to create an expanded shared digital space, with individual leaderboards and timed play sessions. Players could position devices side-by-side to discover hidden areas and extend the playable world. The game was distributed through Teletoon.com and developed by Toronto-based agency Kolody, with creative direction by Chad Borlase.
