Objective
In 2019, Australia faced devastating bushfires intensified by climate change. NRMA Insurance recognized that the next generation would face escalating climate-related disasters and wanted to empower young people through education. The campaign aimed to prepare children aged 7–12 for natural disasters by making disaster preparedness engaging and interactive rather than didactic.
Solution
Thinkerbell created Climate Warriors, the world's first bushfire simulation game built within Minecraft, using NRMA Insurance's own data to inform the game's climate trends. In collaboration with design studio Blockworks, the team constructed nearly 29 million blocks to build an authentic Australian coastal town complete with local wildlife and vegetation. Players complete challenges inspired by real Black Saturday bushfire scenarios—installing rooftop sprinklers, coordinating helicopter rescues, testing materials for heat resistance, and managing emergency community responses. The game was distributed through Minecraft Education Edition and Minecraft Marketplace, making it freely accessible in schools across Australia.
Results
Climate Warriors received recognition as a D&AD award winner in the Gaming & Virtual Worlds category in 2022. However, the game was made available through Minecraft: Education Edition to NSW government schools, not throughout Australia as a whole.
