Objective
LEGO wanted a permanent, brand-owned home inside the platform where its audience already lives, rather than a one-off tie-in. The goal was product-led, not marketing-led: build a genuinely fun, safe game that would pull digital-first kids and families into registered LEGO accounts and connect physical brick-building to digital play.
Solution
Players open Fortnite, select the LEGO mode from the lobby, and set up a world — choosing whether hunger, hostile mobs, and death are switched on — before dropping in as a LEGO-styled version of a Fortnite character. A tutorial companion walks them through the basics, then it's an open loop: chop and mine for resources, craft tools, and snap LEGO bricks together (with real building-set physics) to put up shelters and grow them into villages. Players venture into caves and the wider 95 km² world to fight or dodge mobs, solo or in a group of up to eight, restocking supplies and expanding their base between runs. There's no fixed end screen — a session closes whenever the group logs off, with the world and its builds saved for next time.
Results
Launch drew over 2.4 million concurrent players, briefly making it Fortnite's most-played mode ever, with concurrent players (2.3M+) outnumbering all four core Battle Royale modes combined; Fortnite overall topped 7.6 million concurrent players that launch weekend. The mode drove 8 million new LEGO gaming accounts, 8.3 million Twitch views in its first month, and 2.5 billion earned media impressions, alongside the highest search volume for "LEGO" in five years. LEGO Group's H1 2024 revenue rose 13% to roughly $4.65bn, with the CEO citing the Epic/Fortnite partnership as a growth driver.

From the Fortnite lobby, the player selects LEGO Fortnite alongside Battle Royale, Rocket Racing and Festival — it is free and requires no separate download. Creating a world means setting its rules: hunger on or off, hostile mobs on or off, death on or off, and a difficulty choice between cozy and expert play.

The player spawns into an open LEGO landscape as a LEGO-minifigure version of a Fortnite character — Brite Bomber, Cuddle Team Leader, Raven and others — with a tutorial villager nearby handing out first instructions.

The core loop is gather, craft, build: the player forages berries, corn, pumpkins, wood and rock to avoid starving, then opens the build menu to place a campfire and raise a Simple Shack from LEGO pieces that snap together and break apart with physics, setting up a Crafting Bench under its roof. A placed bed fixes the world's respawn point, and the bench turns out starter gear — axe, pickaxe, shortsword — that breaks quickly and needs replacing.

Night brings hostile creatures — spiders, wolves, bears, skeletons — that the player fights with sword and crossbow or waits out inside the shelter. Damage is healed by eating raw food or, later, meals cooked at a grill for stronger recovery.

Fireflies periodically appear and lead the player to hidden chests and loot llamas, which burst into a shower of items when petted.

Placing a Village Shrine lets the player recruit wandering NPCs as villagers and assign them jobs so they gather materials automatically, while a 24-slot inventory and chests scattered around the base handle the resulting overflow.

Progression sends the player underground into caves for materials absent on the surface, such as marble, knotroot and copper, and out into other biomes whose heat or cold demands the right gear before traveling. Back at base, upgrading the crafting bench and village unlocks specialized stations — loom, oven, juicer — and better recipes.

Two post-launch updates add new activities: 'Gone Fishin'' lets the player craft a rod, bait bucket and spyglass to fish 15 species, and 'Mechanical Mayhem' lets them build and drive vehicles — Speeder, Offroader and Hauler — to cross the world faster.

Outside the game, players can link their LEGO Insiders account to their Epic Games account, receiving free LEGO-style outfits such as Explorer Emilie and Mr. Dappermint in return.
