Objective

Google created Map Dive to showcase Google Maps capabilities and engage users with Pegman, the iconic Google Maps mascot, through an interactive and innovative experience. Launched during the Google I/O 2013 conference, the campaign was intended to demonstrate cutting-edge web technologies and motion tracking capabilities. The project highlighted the creative possibilities of the Google Maps JavaScript API and Chrome browser for immersive digital experiences.

Solution

Map Dive is an interactive skydiving game where users control Pegman as he free falls through the sky, navigating through a series of gates to land on famous monuments around the globe. The original installation was built for Google's Liquid Galaxy platform, running on 7 synchronized Chrome browser instances with motion tracking via an Asus Xtion Pro depth camera and custom C++ motion detection. The desktop version uses Google Maps API v3, WebGL, CSS3, and node.js. Players successfully landing on landmarks trigger fireworks and hidden easter eggs. The experience combines real-time motion sensing with 3D visualization to create an immersive skydiving simulation.
