Objective

The Greater Manchester Good Employment Charter, a 2019 voluntary membership scheme aimed at raising employment standards across the region, launched this game during Good Employment Week 2024 to build on the success of the previous year's Week and raise awareness of workplace equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI). The primary business objective was to engage Manchester commuters in conversations about fair employment practices by placing an accessible game on public transport, distributed via QR codes on tram seats and in marketing materials.

Solution

Corporation Pop created a 3D web-based snakes and ladders game featuring 100 squares arranged vertically, playable directly in a web browser via QR codes placed on tram seats and in marketing materials, opening without the need to download a third-party app. Players roll a dice to advance up the board, with snakes climbing up and ladders dropping down to form a vertical tower. Three playable characters with different privilege levels (advantaged, neutral, and disadvantaged) move simultaneously through career-themed scenarios including job interviews, pay negotiations, and redundancy situations. The game presents three possible outcomes (positive, neutral, negative) for each workplace scenario, highlighting discrimination, nepotism, and unprofessional behavior as obstacles. Corporation Pop also designed the game's naming, logo, in-game UI, and iconography. Built in Unity with pixelated 8-bit retro aesthetic and custom shader effects, it was designed for quick play during commutes as part of Greater Manchester public transport integration.

Results

The campaign was integrated into Good Employment Week 2024 programming and the game was designed for quick play during commutes. No specific participation numbers, engagement metrics, or quantified outcomes were published.
