Objective

Royal Caribbean wanted a reason for guests to keep coming back to the Two70 lounge on its Quantum-class ships between scheduled shows, and a way to make the line's "adventure" branding feel tangible rather than just a tagline. The experience also had to work without adding hardware or downloads, since anything installed on the ship complicates the guest journey.

Solution

A guest walks into the Two70 lounge, opens the Royal Caribbean International app already on their phone, and launches Expedition TWO70 — no extra download, no headset handed out at the door. Raising the phone's camera turns the room into an Aztec-styled ruin: temples, totems and stone archways appear layered over the real balconies and stage. Playing means moving through the space itself, turning a full circle to track targets, walking up to the balcony rail or over toward the stage as the game calls for it. Four challenges escalate in difficulty — shooting targets in Ruin Blaster, working through Temple Raiser's puzzles, climbing toward Summit of Light, and navigating the Totem Recall maze. Clearing a challenge earns a gold mask and unlocks an AR selfie filter the guest can put on and post to social media before heading off to the next activity.

How it plays

8 steps
  1. 1

The game opens directly from the Royal Caribbean International app while the player is in the Two70 entertainment venue on a Quantum-class ship, with no separate download or onboard device required, and can be played whenever the space isn't hosting a show.

  2. 2

Pointing the phone's camera at the room overlays an Aztec-styled world of temples, ruins, and totems onto the real architecture of Two70, with the AR objects staying fixed in place despite the ship's movement.

  3. 3

The player is offered four challenges of increasing difficulty — Ruin Blaster, Temple Raiser, Summit of Light, and Totem Recall — so newcomers can stop after the easier ones while returning players tackle the harder ones.

  4. 4

In Ruin Blaster, the player aims an AR crossbow by pointing the phone toward a balcony view of floating islands and fires arrows at targets, with aim-assist helping line up shots.

  5. 5

In Temple Raiser, the player walks around the venue's stage to view a four-story temple maze from different angles, then steers a ball through the cylindrical labyrinth toward a goal, requiring physical movement around the room to see every side.

  6. 6

In Summit of Light, the player taps mirrors to rotate them, redirecting a beam of light from mirror to mirror until it reaches the target, with each level adding complexity.

  7. 7

In Totem Recall, the player watches a sequence flash across two columns of carved images, then repeats it by aiming at and tapping the correct icons in order — a Simon-says memory mechanic executed in AR.

  8. 8

Completing a challenge earns a golden mask, and collecting all four lets the player "wear" the full mask and take a shareable AR selfie.
