Objective
General Mills sought to promote healthy eating habits among consumers through the EatBetterAmerica initiative, launched in September 2007. Rather than relying on traditional nutritional messaging from health authorities, the brand aimed to make eating better fun and engaging by framing it as entertainment. The campaign positioned healthy eating as enjoyable rather than obligatory.
Solution
The Good Food Fight was an interactive web-based edutainment game featuring animated video sequences of characters (including 'Ruthless Ruth') created via green screen filming. Players selected virtual food and character 'grubslingers' to engage in arcade-style food fights on the webpage. The game linked to real recipes from EatBetterAmerica.com; after completing a fight, players could 'ambush a friend' by sending them a personalized link with a healthy recipe, which would splash them with virtual food and invite them to join. The experience combined humor, interactivity, and viral sharing mechanics to normalize healthy food choices.
