Objective

ParticipACTION, a Canadian organization promoting active living, needed to communicate the newly released 24-Hour Movement Guidelines for Children and Youth (WHO, 2016) to kids aged 5–17 and their parents. The guidelines recommended specific amounts of physical activity (sweat), light movement (step), screen time limits (sit), and sleep (8–11 hours). The challenge was making these health recommendations engaging and tangible rather than abstract for young audiences.

Solution

Build Your Best Day is an interactive online game where children create their ideal 24-hour day by selecting from 180 activities across four categories: Sweat (60+ minutes of vigorous activity), Step (light outdoor movement), Sit (limiting screen time to max 2 hours), and Sleep (8–11 hours depending on age). Activities ranged from everyday tasks like dancing or helping with chores to imaginative scenarios like sailing a pirate ship or swimming with mermaids. After building their day, users received instant feedback on whether their choices aligned with the guidelines. The game was built in HTML5 and hosted at buildyourbestday.participaction.com, created by agency Zulu Alpha Kilo with production by Jam3.

Results

The project received an Awwwards Honorable Mention in June 2017 and won an Applied Arts Magazine award in 2018. Specific user engagement metrics, reach, or behavioral impact figures were not published in available sources.
