Objective
Audible was launching a starry audio adaptation of Orwell's '1984' for the novel's 75th anniversary and needed to reach listeners aged 16 to 24 — an audience conventional advertising doesn't land with. Twitch, whose base of 250 million-plus users skews toward that age group, offered a way in, and a chance to test whether young viewers would actually stick with long branded content if it gave them something to do. The campaign also aimed to make Orwell's warnings about surveillance and propaganda feel current for a gaming audience already talking about AI.
Solution
On April 17, 2024, a mysterious 24/7 channel called Truth HQ appeared on Twitch with no explanation: a live feed from inside a propaganda ministry, its screens looping AI-generated broadcasts for the fictional regime Ingsoc. Viewers flooded into chat and Discord trying to work out what they were watching. Over the following weeks, three Twitch streamers were cast as members of an underground resistance cell, each given a custom game built around their assigned role — Engineer, Operator, Artist — and their chats became their partners in cracking it: the puzzles couldn't be solved without input from viewers. An AI adversary worked against them in real time, planting traps and slipping fake allies into the chat. Beating it broke into the propaganda channel's live feed and unlocked an exclusive ten-minute excerpt from the '1984' audio drama.
Results
The three live streams drew over 1 million unique viewers across six hours — a 400% lift over Twitch's benchmark for sponsored broadcasts — and generated 34,000 chat messages, 7x the platform's community-engagement benchmark. Total watch time reached 3.5 million minutes, versus the roughly 750,000 minutes Twitch typically sees across three brand partner streams. '1984' went on to top Audible's global chart for April and became the UK's #1 audiobook.

A Twitch channel called Truth HQ goes live on April 17, 2024, with no announcement: a 24-hour propaganda broadcast for the fictional Ingsoc government from Orwell's "1984," produced entirely by a custom AI called Gaze Monitor, which generates roughly 900 pieces of propaganda content per day so the feed never repeats. Viewers and Discord communities are left to work out what is happening on their own.

Alongside the mystery channel, three real Twitch streamers have their normal broadcasts briefly hijacked by the signal, each revealing a cryptic letter on camera, seeding the story before the scripted episodes begin.

Episode 1 casts streamer AnnaDemetriou as an Engineer who must hack into Truth HQ's wireless network from outside. Chat solves an out-of-stream puzzle, hunting for hidden documentation and relaying calibration steps for a makeshift device to get online.
- 4
Still in the Engineer's episode, the player then navigates a network of in-world computer terminals to steal a robot manual and a building blueprint, while Gaze Monitor actively works to throw the intrusion off course; the episode ends on a cliffhanger as the stolen data is smuggled out on a disk.

- 5
Episode 2 casts streamer Tyrone as an Operator who remote-controls a robot through Truth HQ's corridors, with chat steering it past motion-triggered surveillance cameras to retrieve the disk.
- 6
Gaze Monitor responds with a laser-grid defense at the mainframe room that must be crossed with precisely timed movements; succeeding lets the robot insert the disk, killing the propaganda feed and revealing an access code for the next episode.
- 7
Episode 3 casts streamer CaptainPuffy as an Artist entering the access code, triggering a smarter version of Gaze Monitor that forces the player through a series of online puzzle games: chat hunts hidden links, decodes encrypted messages, and must identify an AI-generated impostor planting false clues in chat.
- 8
In the final minutes, Gaze Monitor triggers a self-destruct countdown and the player races to knock out the broadcast system screen by screen, finishing with the Big Brother "eye" node; defeating it hands control of the feed to the players, who hear an exclusive 10-minute clip of the Audible "1984" audio drama live on stream.
- 9
The campaign closes on an Orwellian twist: Big Brother's eye reclaims the feed, denies any disruption ever occurred, declares the three streamers model citizens, and the channel reverts to AI control.
