Objective
To promote the theatrical release of 'A Minecraft Movie' (released April 4, 2025), Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures created an in-game activation within the Minecraft ecosystem. The campaign aimed to reach the existing player base — more than 170 million active players who visit Minecraft every month — directly within the game, leveraging the cultural moment of a major motion picture adaptation to drive engagement and build awareness among Minecraft's core audience.
Solution
Warner Bros. added a special movie-inspired world to the Minecraft Marketplace alongside complementary content including new skins, maps, and mini-games. The activation functioned as an in-platform trailer and promotional experience, allowing players to engage with the film's themes and characters directly within the game. This Marketplace-based approach enabled seamless distribution to millions of Minecraft players without requiring external downloads or leaving the game environment. The activation was reinforced by cross-promotional food tie-ins: McDonald's launched a limited-time 'A Minecraft Movie Meal' and Happy Meal with themed packaging, exclusive toys, and codes that unlocked in-game content, while Doritos released limited-edition movie-themed flavors.
Results
'A Minecraft Movie' opened to a record-shattering $163 million domestically and $313 million globally.
