Objective
Target aimed to revolutionize its 2014 holiday retail experience by integrating cutting-edge mobile technology with physical stores. The initiative sought to drive foot traffic to over 1,800 Target locations during Q4, bridge digital and in-store engagement, and raise donations for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital while demonstrating advanced capabilities like Project Tango augmented reality.
Solution
The campaign featured six interactive WebGL games playable on mobile browsers via Target.com/Play starting December 2, 2014, including sledding, ice fishing, snowball fights, icicle xylophone, and Hot Wheels racing, all starring Target's Bullseye mascot in winter settings. Shoppers found hidden unlock codes throughout physical stores to unlock new characters and game levels. A parallel augmented-reality experience using Google's Project Tango technology transformed store aisles into immersive 3D winter environments at four flagship locations (Sunnyvale, Chicago, Dallas, Roseville) from December 4-14, creating 1:1-scale motion-tracked gameplay where customers could explore virtual landscapes using tablets. Games were built with Three.js and ES6 compiled via Google Traceur; AR components used Unity3D. The monetization model committed $1 to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital per game played, capped at $1 million total.
Results
Target did not publicly disclose total player counts, engagement duration, or conversion metrics. The final donation amount to St. Jude remains undisclosed, though Target committed up to $1 million per game played. The campaign was a limited-time holiday promotion in December 2014 at four select Target locations. Bullseye's Playground received recognition from The FWA (Favourite Website Awards).
