Objective

Volkswagen Australia needed to launch the new Golf and Golf GTI on a TV budget far smaller than its rivals', in a category drowning in sameness. Its target buyers — younger, ad-fatigued drivers who reach for their phones the moment a commercial break starts — were tuning out entirely, and the brand still needed to shift its post-diesel-scandal image from "reliable" to "exciting." Rather than fight the phone habit, Volkswagen built the ad break around it.

Solution

A QR code in the first ad of the break sends viewers straight into a browser-based race on their phone — no app to download, just turn the phone sideways and you're behind the wheel of the new Golf GTI. In the garage you customize your car, then choose a track: three practice courses (coast, mountain pass, outback) that are open any time, or "win mode," a futuristic city circuit that only unlocks for the length of the actual ad break. Once it starts, you're racing live against everyone else watching the same broadcast, watching your position update on a shared leaderboard, for as long as the break lasts — about three minutes. Beat the qualifying time and you're entered to win a real Golf GTI. QR codes on billboards, bus stops and print ads let people run the practice tracks anytime, outside the live windows.

Results

The campaign drew over 70,000 plays and more than 90,000 visits to the campaign page, a 97% jump in traffic, with over 5,000 hours of active play time logged. It hijacked more than $2.7 million in media value from competing ads running in the same breaks, hacking over 20 ad breaks across three weeks. Dealer callbacks rose 436%, stock enquiries 97%, and test drives 725%, and Golf sales grew 55% during the active campaign period; brand metrics for "inspiring" and "exciting" both doubled.

How it plays

8 steps
  1. 1

The game launches from a QR code shown during a live TV ad break; scanning it opens the game instantly in the phone's mobile browser with no app download. Opening the link on a desktop instead redirects to a landing page with the QR code, since the game only runs on mobile.

  2. 2

Players rotate the phone to landscape and control the car with touch. Before racing, a garage screen lets them customize their Golf GTI.

  3. 3

From a mode menu, players choose Play mode, a training mode open at any time, or Win mode, a live competition that only unlocks during an actual ad break.

  4. 4

Play mode offers three tracks: a coastal route, a snowy mountain pass, and an outback trail. During a live ad break, a fourth track opens in their place — a futuristic night-city circuit available only for the duration of that broadcast window.

  5. 5

Players drive with simple touch steering built to be easy to pick up on a first attempt while leaving room to master.

  6. 6

In Win mode, a race lasts as long as the ad break itself, roughly three minutes, and runs live against everyone who scanned the same code during that same broadcast, with a leaderboard and timings updating in real time across three time zones.

  7. 7

Finishing the race under the qualifying time enters the player into a drawing for a new Golf GTI Mk8; falling short just sends them back to training tracks to try again during the next break.

  8. 8

Outside of TV airtime, QR codes on out-of-home ads at train stations and bus stops lead to the same training version of the game, and the competitive track and mode close down again as soon as the ad break ends.
