Objective
JC Penney sought to promote its Dorm Life clothing line to college students through an engaging interactive experience. The campaign targeted the dorm culture market segment with a branded entertainment approach that combined casual brand awareness with entertainment value. Developed by EVB San Francisco, it was JCPenney's first marketing game aimed specifically at young women aged 17–19 preparing for college, part of the retailer's broader push to ramp up digital marketing for the back-to-school period.
Solution
An interactive arcade-style game with retro-themed graphics where players navigate challenges by dodging obstacles. The game mechanic centered on a simple dodge-based gameplay loop, designed with throwback visual styling to appeal to college audiences. The experience was positioned as 'Dork Dodge,' playing on college humor and dormitory culture references, hosted at dorkdodge.com. Players chose an avatar and could view profiles of other 'dorm mates' in a social-networking style akin to MySpace, navigating different rooms where video footage brought characters to life and multiple-choice answers determined the way out — the goal being to dodge dorks and find true love. Dorm Life products such as hampers and lamps were used during gameplay to earn points or avoid pitfalls, doubling as decorating ideas. At the end of the game, players could browse Dorm Life gear or get freshman-life tips via the campaign's Facebook page (facebook.com/dormlife). Support came from word-of-mouth marketing and blog seeding rather than traditional TV or print.
