Objective

Gorillaz launched a multi-chapter interactive game to promote their third-phase album 'Plastic Beach' (2010). The game served as a transmedia extension of the album, connecting to key singles and the band's visual narrative. It aimed to engage fans through interactive gameplay while driving album awareness and direct monetization via paid downloads and premium content.

Solution

Escape to Plastic Beach was a multi-chapter action-adventure game featuring three distinct gameplay mechanics tied to the album's music videos. Chapter 1 (racing/pursuit) drew from 'Stylo', Chapter 2 (water-themed) from 'On Melancholy Hill', and Chapter 3 (flight-based) let players control character Murdoc around Plastic Beach island. The game was released free-to-play on Gorillaz.com in February–March 2010, with Chapter 3 also available as a paid version (€1.49) or free for album owners who entered an access code. An iOS version launched on the App Store in July 2010 for $0.99. Players purchasing Chapter 3 received an MP3 download of 'Superfast Jellyfish' as a bonus. Developed by Matmi New Media Design Ltd and Gorillaz' in-house studio Zombie Flesh Eaters.

Results

The game received fan acclaim and won a BT Music Digital Award for 'Best Artist Promotion'. IGN scored it 4.5/10. Specific engagement metrics (downloads, playtime, impact on album sales) were not publicly disclosed. The web game was deactivated in 2014; the mobile version became incompatible with modern devices, though archives preserve the code.
