Objective
Google launched Smarty Pins to demonstrate the capabilities of the Google Maps API while creating an engaging educational experience. The game served both as a technical showcase of Google's platform and as an entertaining way for users to test and expand their geography and trivia knowledge. By combining interactive maps with game mechanics, Google positioned geography learning as an addictive, accessible form of entertainment.
Solution
Smarty Pins is a browser-based geography trivia game built on the Google Maps API, playable on both mobile and desktop. Players select from six trivia categories (arts, culture, sports, and more), then answer geography questions by dragging pins to correct locations on an interactive map. The scoring system awards players with 1,000 starting miles, with correct answers earning additional miles and speed bonuses, while incorrect answers deduct miles until the game ends. The game features 2,300 pieces of trivia content and prioritizes accessibility across devices.
Results
Nearly 4 million people played Smarty Pins, answering over 13 million questions with an average session length exceeding 5 minutes. The game took 9 months to develop and earned recognition from industry judges who praised it as clever, educational, and entirely fun.
