Objective
During the first pandemic lockdown in 2021, Google Arts & Culture aimed to reconnect isolated families and friends around a shared cultural activity. The goal was to recreate the joy of collaborative puzzle-solving gatherings—particularly bringing together generations separated by distance—while promoting discovery of museum artworks and cultural engagement online.
Solution
Puzzle Party is a cooperative, real-time jigsaw puzzle game where unlimited players simultaneously complete puzzles featuring artworks from Google Arts & Culture's collection of 500+ pieces from major museums. Players choose from three difficulty levels to accommodate all ages. The puzzles are automatically generated from artworks including works by Warhol, Vermeer, and Amy Sherald. The design emphasizes simplicity and intuitiveness—no tutorials needed. Created by Gael Hugo as part of the Google Arts & Culture Lab's series of art experiments launched during lockdown.
