Objective

Ghostbusters aimed to expand the franchise into augmented reality and engage audiences during the theatrical release of Ghostbusters: Afterlife in November 2021. Imprezario Entertainment, in collaboration with Sony and Ghost Corps, sought to offer fans both longtime and new "a gateway to another dimension" through an immersive AR mobile experience that complemented the film's marketing campaign.

Solution

Ghostbusters: scARe is an augmented reality mobile game for iOS and Android that launched November 19, 2021. Players use their phone's camera to catch ghosts overlaid in their real-world environment, engaging with core mechanics including collecting nuclear energy cells, solving ESP puzzles, and physically dodging ectoplasm attacks. The experience leverages multiple device features: camera, vibration, LED light, touch screen, and ASMR audio. Cast members from the film—Finn Wolfhard, McKenna Grace, Celeste O'Connor, Logan Kim, and Dan Aykroyd—reprise their roles to guide players throughout the game. The game adopts an episodic model with the first two episodes available free at launch; additional episodes became available for purchase over time. Kreativa Studio contributed visual direction and UX/UI design.
