Objective

Ebuyer, a UK tech electronics retailer, launched an interactive browser game to engage tech enthusiasts and celebrate gaming history during the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One console launch window in December 2013. The campaign aimed to drive brand awareness and engagement by combining entertainment with nostalgia, allowing players to explore seven generations of gaming consoles.

Solution

Odyssey is a side-scrolling runner platformer with seven unlockable levels, each representing a different generation of gaming consoles from Atari through PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 eras. Players collect over 160 gaming consoles throughout the game, with original artwork reflecting the visual style of each console generation. The narrative follows a protagonist offered to test a virtual reality headset; when an AI glitch occurs, the player must recover pieces of corrupted memory via past gaming systems. Hosted as a free browser game accessible via www.ebuyer.com/odyssey.

Results

Odyssey was nominated for an Awwwards award in December 2013, receiving 15 community votes with overall scores ranging from 5.5 to 7.25 out of 10.
