Objective
Bethesda and Arkane Studios launched Rat Assassin as a free promotional mobile game ahead of Dishonored's October 2012 console and PC release. The campaign aimed to build awareness and player familiarity with Dishonored's core stealth-action mechanics during the critical pre-launch window, leveraging the emerging casual-gaming space to reach broader audiences beyond traditional gaming platforms.
Solution
Rat Assassin was developed by Rokkan as a free iOS game (iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad) with mechanics inspired by Fruit Ninja—players slice plagued rats using touchscreen gestures across twelve challenges. The game incorporated Dishonored's supernatural abilities including Bend Time, Shadow Kills, and Adrenaline Kills. Special power-ups included Bone Charms to slow time and Spring Razors to clear the screen. Combo slicing of multiple rats in one motion earned bonus points. The game featured a competitive engagement layer tracking player performance by country via a heat map on the dedicated ratassassin.com website.
Results
The game achieved a 4.5-star rating on iTunes.
