Objective

Daffy's, a discount retail store in New York City, aimed to raise brand awareness among young, trendy consumers through an unconventional, participatory campaign. The brand sought to create buzz and engagement without relying on traditional advertising channels.

Solution

The campaign deployed 40 puzzle pieces across subway stations in downtown Manhattan and Brooklyn, each piece featuring a camera icon and the hashtag #UNDERGROUNDPUZZLE. Passersby were encouraged to photograph the pieces and share them on Twitter, with clues and instructions broadcast via a live Twitter stream. When all 40 pieces were assembled, they revealed a bold nude image of a couple paired with the tagline 'More Bang. Less Buck'—a double entendre playing on the brand's value positioning. The month-long activation relied purely on social participation and viral momentum, with no financial incentives offered.

Results

The full puzzle was assembled and shared on social media within two weeks of launch. The complete image was subsequently featured on Fashion Pulse Daily. Quantified metrics regarding reach, engagement, or sales impact were not publicly disclosed.
