Objective
YouTube Music and Google created an AI-powered singing challenge to celebrate the 44th anniversary of Queen's iconic 'Bohemian Rhapsody' performance and support Mercury Phoenix Trust, a charitable organization dedicated to fighting HIV/AIDS. The project showcased Google's advanced machine learning capabilities while engaging fans of the legendary band.
Solution
FreddieMeter allowed users to sing one of four Queen tracks—Bohemian Rhapsody, Don't Stop Me Now, Somebody to Love, or We Are the Champions—while an on-device AI model analyzed their pitch, timbre, and melody against Freddie Mercury's original vocals, assigning a score from 0 to 100. Users could share custom scorecards with the #FreddieChallenge hashtag, challenge friends, and donate to Mercury Phoenix Trust. The technology processed audio locally on-device, ensuring privacy unless users chose to share results.
